Which German level do I need? A1 to C1 explained

Which German course is right for me: A1, A2, B1, B2 or C1? These levels help you choose a suitable learning goal. They belong to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Your starting point depends on what you can already understand and express.

German levels A1 to C2, simply explained

A1: simple first conversations and personal information.
A2: familiar everyday situations using simple language.
B1: connected speech and writing on familiar topics.
B2: more complex content and explaining viewpoints.
C1: flexible, fluent and precise language use.
C2: understanding and expressing subtle differences in meaning.

These descriptions follow the Council of Europe CEFR scale. DEE currently offers German courses from A1 to C1. C2 is part of the scale, but is not automatically an available course.

Which level do I need for my goal?

Everyday life, vocational training, work and university can involve different language needs. Before enrolling, ask the receiving institution which level and specific exam it accepts. A language level, course attendance and an officially recognised exam certificate are different things.

How long does an intensive German course take?

Our currently listed intensive courses run for eight weeks, with lessons from Monday to Thursday. Lesson times depend on the level and course format. Your progress also depends on your previous knowledge, attendance and practice between lessons.

Unsure whether to start at A2, B1 or B2?

Perhaps you understand conversations but still need help with writing. Our free German placement test takes about 45 minutes and helps you choose a suitable course. It does not replace an official language exam.

Is the placement test free?

Yes. The placement test at DEE is free and carries no obligation. You can take it at the school or online.

How do I enrol in a German course?

Choose your level, format and start date on the course page and complete the online booking. You will receive an enrolment confirmation by email within three working days.

Can I attend a course online?

Yes. DEE offers courses from A1 to C1 in Dortmund and as live online classes. Choose your preferred format on the course page, where you will also find class times, fees and dates.

When do the courses start?
